Novocarbo's CCO stresses the importance of Carbon Dioxide Removal in the German Tagesspiegel

Where to put all that CO2? Not only companies are facing this issue, but society is also being put to the test. The path to net zero will require negative emissions on a relevant scale.

Not too far in the future, millions of tons of carbon dioxide will need to be removed from the atmosphere. For the DACCS, BECCS and PyCCS to really deliver substantial emission cuts that go beyond the avoidance of greenhouse gases, an initial policy framework for large-scale projects is needed today.

“Future-proof governance that takes account of the reciprocal relationship between CO2 reduction and removal must ensure that carbon sinks do not counteract urgently needed emission reduction efforts”, said Novocarbo CCO Venna von Lepel

Venna von Lepel makes an important contribution to the debate with her observations for the well-known German Tagesspiegel Background on the specific design of a regulatory framework. Whilst this is currently underway in the EU, there are uncertainties as to whether, when and how carbon removals can be integrated into the domestic carbon trading schemes.

The article appeals for the temporary coexistence of two closely linked but clearly separated allowance systems in terms of reduction targets. A robust framework provides planning and price certainty, ensures significant CO2 reductions, and creates promising investment opportunities.
