Enabling sponge city concepts in Lund, Sweden
The Swedish construction company Skanska has long since made biochar part of its sustainability strategy and a vital material for fostering sustainable projects with a reduced footprint. An example is the 'NobelÂparken' in the Swedish city of Lund, which acts as a peaceful green oasis next to the bustling municipality. For this project, biochar was applied as a substrate and mixed with compost. The mixture was used throughout the park and has since contributed to preserving 236 different plant species spread over 3.8 hectares.
Replacing cement with biochar at the Carbon Removal Park Baltic Sea, Germany
For the construction of our largest carbon removal park to date, we produced concrete blocks that consist of 1/3 biochar by volume. This application can replace cement and thus drastically reduce the CO2 footprint of the final product while improving product features.
Water filtration at Plaine de Plainpalais in Geneva, Switzerland
In 2018, Geneva used biochar-enriched compost to replant trees at the iconic Plaine de Plainpalais. The main goal of the sponge city project was to safeguard the water quality of Lake Geneva. Thanks to its porous surface, biochar can effectively filter pollutants in stormwater runoff while retaining water and nutrients for plants.

Replacing silver in solar plants with biochar
'Silver Lining' is a collaboration project with the Fraunhofer Institute für Solare Energiesyteme ISE, Meyer Burger, and OTH Oberflächentechnik Hagen GmbH & Co. KG. At the center of the project is how biochar can serve as a conductive filler in printing pastes for metalization. Our combined scientific research aims to achieve the electrical conductivity of biochar particles needed to ensure optimal solar panel functionality. The primary objective is to significantly reduce the amount of silver in the conductor paths.
Biochar-based substrates for better water filtration
In a collaborative research project with HafenCity University in Hamburg, we examined the effects of co-composted biochar on stormÂwater management systems. StormÂwater runoff in cities spews various pollutants into aquatic systems. The research team tested to what extent co-comÂposted biochar in substrates can remove selected trace organic contaÂminants in blue-green infrastructures.
The results showed: the higher the concentration of biochar in subÂstrates, the lower the contamination.
Conductive thermoÂplastic with 40 % less fossil polymere
We developed this project in cooperation with the IfBB (Institue für Biokunststoffe und BioverbundÂwerkstoffe) and the University of Hanover. The electrically conductive thermoplastic granulation based on dust-reduced biochar makes it possible for us to replace 40 % of the polymer in the transport box.
